Privacy Policy
Last updated October 4, 2026
This policy explains what information Bird Tripping ("we", "us") collects when you use birdtripping.com, how we use it, and the choices you have.
Location and GPS data
- Location is only used when you allow it in your browser or phone — for example to start a Live Birding session, find nearby hotspots, or tag a sighting.
- During a Live Birding session we record GPS points (latitude, longitude, time and, if your device provides it, altitude) to draw your route and calculate distance. Imprecise readings are discarded.
- Routes and sighting locations are stored with your account so they sync across devices. They are private unless you choose to share a session link or post a checklist.
- You can deny or revoke location permission at any time in your browser or device settings. Demo mode lets you try the app without sharing location.
Google sign-in
If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and profile picture from Google to create your account. We do not receive your Google password and do not access your Gmail, contacts or other Google data.
What we store
- Account details: email address, username, display name and profile information you add.
- Birding content: trips, itineraries, lodging and expenses, checklists, sightings, photos, live sessions and routes.
- Social activity: follows, comments, reactions and chat messages.
- Guide and booking information: guide profiles, packages, bookings, guest names and phone numbers you enter, and signed waivers. Card payments are processed by Stripe; we never store full card numbers.
- Usage analytics: anonymous page views via Google Analytics to help us improve the site.
We do not sell your personal information.
Third-party services
We use trusted providers to run the service, including our hosting and database provider, Google (sign-in and analytics), Stripe (payments), eBird (bird and hotspot data) and Wikipedia (species photos). They process data only as needed to provide their services.
Account deletion
You can permanently delete your account at any time from your profile page. This removes your account and the trips, checklists, sessions, photos and other content tied to it. Records we must keep for legal or payment reasons (such as completed booking receipts) may be retained as required. You can also email us to request deletion.
Children
Bird Tripping is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
We may update this policy. Significant changes will be announced on the site.
